Fuorisentiero
Natural Association of Lucanian Apennines and Basilicata
Lucania and Basilicata are regions at the south of Italy, between Naples and Bari, covered by deep forests of beech and oak. This hilly terrain is inhabited by many precious animals like wild cat, porcupine or falcons. However, the protection of the region is struggling with official authorities, local people ignorance and also natural issues like invasive species of European wild pigs, decimating the population of the original Italian cinghiale pigs.
The way to help is a supervision of protected animals, monitoring their needs and habits. For example by phototrapping or exploring their nests and burrows with special endoscope camera.
The other important fact is raising awareness among locals - organising excursions. Hiking and exploring the nature is not a part of south-italian culture by heart, and it is not casual to spend your sunday in the mountains like in Germany or Austria.
Through summer camps for children and guided tours for adults there is a chance to show people how to behave beyond the city borders.
